Key Visitor Rules

Please follow these guidelines during your visit

Do Not Touch the Stones

Touching, leaning on, or climbing the stones is strictly forbidden to protect them from damage and erosion. Please stay on the designated pathways.

Photography

Personal photography and video are welcome. However, the use of tripods may be restricted in busy areas, and commercial photography requires prior permission.

No Drones

The use of drones over Stonehenge and the surrounding landscape is strictly prohibited without explicit prior authorisation from English Heritage.

Bags and Luggage

There are no cloakroom or luggage storage facilities at Stonehenge. Please only bring small, essential bags with you as you will need to carry them for the duration of your visit.

Common questions about site regulations

Why can't I walk inside the stone circle?
Restricting access protects the fragile archaeology underfoot and the delicate lichens on the stones from erosion. It also ensures all visitors can get clear, unobstructed photos. Special access tours are available outside of main hours.
Can I have a picnic at Stonehenge?
You can bring your own food and drink to consume in the designated outdoor seating areas near the Visitor Centre, but not at the monument field itself.
Are there security checks?
Yes, bags may be subject to random searches upon entry for the safety and security of all visitors.
Is smoking allowed?
Smoking, including e-cigarettes and vaping, is not permitted inside any of the buildings, on the shuttle buses, or within the monument field.
